Uchi means home in Japanese.  At Uchi we strive to create a space where we can share our love of color, texture and design. We hope to inspire fun and creative ways to adorn your home and your life.

Founded by Yo Akino, Uchi opened in Berkeley, CA in the Spring of 2018. When The Wooden Duck, a long time Bay Area furniture company closed, Uchi was offered the opportunity to work with the factory that produced their popular teak furniture lines.  We are continually expanding upon these collections, adding new designs, as well as offering limited custom pieces.

We have curated a selection of innovative and sustainable home goods and accessories made by local and global artisans to add some color and texture to your home and to your life.

We hope to become a vital member of the community and build long lasting relationships with our customers.  Come explore, be inspired, and see what piques your curiosity.

We look forward to meeting you!

The Uchi Team

Tom, Warehouse Manager and Head Salesperson

Tom has been with Uchi since day one:
unloading containers, assembling
furniture, and helping customers with
a friendly smile.

True story, once he offered to go to a
customer’s house to pick something up,
free of charge, and the customer was so
taken aback by Tom’s generosity and
willingness to help resolve the situation,
that the customer became suspicious and
felt compelled to call the store to make
sure he was not being conned, somehow.
Rest assured he wasn’t.
Tom is genuinely that friendly and kind!

Tom is also super creative.  He spends his
down time at the store exploring new
and different endeavors.  He started out
making beautiful serving boards with
wood scraps, which customers
absolutely loved.
He has since moved on to many different
projects and is always up for finding
solutions to anything that comes up at Uchi.

We are so thankful to have Tom and his
positive energy in the store!
